If you love the French seaside, yet are weary of the bare-faced overcharging and pretensions of the Côte d'Azur, try the country's Basque district. It's resorts and villages are as delightful. The beaches are wonderful. And though busy, the area is not absolutely choked by summertime traffic. The Côte d’Azur, otherwise known as the French Riviera, has been synonymous with chic elegance and lofty living for well over a century.
Nice is home to Nice Côte d'Azur Airport, France's third-busiest airport (after Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport and Paris-Orly), which is on an area of partially reclaimed coastal land at the western end of the Promenade des Anglais.
The Côte d'Azur has a Mediterranean climate, with sunny, hot, dry summers and mild winters. Winter temperatures are moderated by the Mediterranean and days of frost are rare.
The French Riviera surrounds the principality of Monaco with a total population of over two million.
